We are a friendly group of theatre enthusiasts. Our membership is made up of a wide variety of people of all ages, backgrounds and experience. Some are actively involved whenever possible; some, because of other commitments, are only involved intermittently. All are welcome.
BDS will be seventy-five years old in 2016, quite an achievement for any society. Over the last seventy-four years we have produced a number of outstanding plays including The Importance of Being Earnest, The Crucible, Hobson's Choice and The Female of the Species; plus musicals like Guys and Dolls, Sweeney Todd, Cabaret and Oh What a Lovely War!
If you are interested in drama and theatre there are many opportunities for you to be involved. Whether behind the scenes, on stage or helping with publicity and administration, your contribution would be valued.
If you would like to become a member, contact us and you can be sure of a welcome at our next event.
Don't forget to leave your feedback on our productions!
The following should answer any questions you have, but if you need any more information, please contact us.
At present we put on two main productions a year, usually in October and May to coincide with the state school half-term breaks. These normally run for three or four nights.
Rehearsals are held in The Women's Hall in Billingshurst High Street from 8.00pm - 10.00pm (ish) where we also stage most of our shows.
We also put on a Patrons' Party at the nearby Fishers Farm Park Theatre; this includes a meal for Patrons and friends, followed by a revue-style entertainment which is great fun for our audience and us as well! As this consists of short musical and comic pieces, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved even if you do not feel you could cope with a large dramatic or musical role - not to mention the vital backstage support.
Theatre trips are arranged two or three times a year and during the summer recess, we hold play readings. All of these are relaxed, informal and enjoyable social occasions.
We are a great team and it's 'all hands to the pump' before and after a show. Members, including the cast and production team, are expected to help with the set-build on the two weekends prior to a show and the set-strike on the Sunday immediately following. You will be amazed at what is achieved.
Our Annual General Meeting is usually held in June when member subscriptions are due at just £25.00 per year.
We could be called the Billingshurst Democratic Dramatic Society! We have no divas or superstars. In one show you could be the lead actor, in the next the director, in charge of props or painting scenery; we believe every role is important and equal in achieving dramatic excellence.
